The Ramat Gan National Park Chess Installation
The National Park, Ramat Gan, Israel
2021
Overview
Commissioned directly by the Mayor of Ramat Gan, this large-scale public installation brings the classic game of strategy to life at the city's central National Park. Designed specifically for a newly developed urban chess square, this project features a series of grand, oversized outdoor chess piece sculptures. The installation serves as a majestic architectural focal point that invites the public to engage with both art and play in an open-air environment.
Process
The execution of these monumental outdoor sculptures required careful planning to balance artistic vision with public safety and durability. Each chess piece was custom-sculpted using highly durable, weather-resistant materials engineered to withstand high-traffic public usage and diverse climate conditions. By scaling up the traditional geometric forms of chess pieces into large-scale environmental sculptures, the process transformed standard functional game elements into heavy-duty, tactile works of public art.
Outcomes
The final outcome is a vibrant, sophisticated gathering hub within the Ramat Gan National Park that successfully bridges competitive play with civic beauty. Rather than static monuments, these giant chess pieces have activated the park's new square, encouraging social interaction, intergenerational games, and community gathering. The project proudly highlights how tailored municipal commissions can enrich public green spaces and foster a distinct sense of cultural identity.
