The Co-Created Tile Series: Community Ceramic Wall Murals
Overview
The 'Co-Created Tile Series' is an innovative, community-driven initiative that transforms blank educational and municipal walls into vibrant ceramic landmarks. This flexible concept adapts beautifully to different local stories: from 'The Family Tree' at Misgav Am, where residents decorated leaf-shaped family crests, to the entrance of Merchavim High School near the Gaza Envelope, where students stylized hundreds of ceramic hearts. By combining individual artistic expressions into a large-scale architectural layout, the series turns public walls into powerful symbols of unity, hope, and collective identity.
Process
The core of this project is structured as an engaging, accessible, and deeply immersive color and design workshop. Rather than working with raw clay, participants are provided with pre-shaped, ready-to-paint ceramic tiles—such as symbolic leaves or hearts—allowing them to focus entirely on their visual storytelling. Under professional artistic guidance, each participant dives into a creative painting process, utilizing specialized ceramic glazes to decorate their tile with personal patterns, names, or meaningful symbols. Once the community glazing phase is complete, the tiles undergo high-temperature kiln firing to seal the vibrant colors and guarantee absolute outdoor durability. Finally, these hundreds of individually painted stories are systematically arranged and permanently embedded onto a selected focal wall, merging into a unified, monumental masterpiece.
Outcomes
The final installations across various campuses successfully upgrade educational environments into spaces of deep pride and shared memory. Rather than a generic mural, viewers are greeted by a richly textured mosaic of human expression where every student or community member can easily identify the specific tile they creatively painted by hand. By focusing on individual artistic choices and color design, this expanding series demonstrates how public installations can instill long-term community ownership and spark daily inspiration.
