Storybook Benches: Sculpting Literature in After-School Clubs

Community After-School Youth Clubs, Dimona, Israel
2021
Overview
Commissioned by the Dimona Municipality to enrich local after-school youth clubs, the 'Global Storybook Benches' project bridges timeless world literature with sustainable public art. Each community center selected a globally beloved children's masterpiece to serve as the conceptual foundation for a custom-built, functional eco-bench. Featuring physical interpretations of universally recognized books like The Fisherman and the Golden Fish, The Little Prince, The Giving Tree, and Dr. Seuss’s inspirational Oh, the Places You'll Go!, the project turns educational facilities into magical spaces of imagination
Process
The creation process combined physical, ecological labor with deep ethical education. Children from the youth clubs were active partners at every stage, collaborating from the initial book selection to the building and painting of the permanent structures. Alongside the physical construction of the upcycled eco-benches, educational staff led dedicated workshops exploring the universal moral themes and life lessons found within these international classics. To complete the immersive experience, several clubs also featured large-scale wall murals that brought these famous book landscapes to life.
Outcomes
The final outcome is a network of colorful, inspiring cultural hubs that have significantly upgraded the youth clubs' environments. Because the stories chosen—ranging from legendary folk tales to modern masterpieces by Dr. Seuss—resonate across cultures and generations, the project creates an instant bridge between the children's daily lives and global creative heritage. These playful, sculptural seating areas now stand as a proud daily reminder of teamwork, shared values, and the timeless power of storytelling.
