Mandalas of Memory: Celebrating a Life Through Eco-Art and Mosaic

Tel aviv , Israel
2021
Overview
Located in a quiet neighborhood community garden in Tel Aviv, this site-specific commemorative installation stands as a beautiful, living tribute to a beloved young woman whose life was tragically lost in a car accident. Rather than a traditional, somber monument, the family and the local community envisioned a space of color, comfort, and connection—a functional eco-bench that celebrates her memory, her warmth, and her enduring light within the neighborhood.
Process
The creation of the space was a profound, multi-stage collaborative healing journey. It began with an intensive two-day workshop where family, friends, and neighbors gathered in the peaceful garden to design and craft intricate mosaic mandalas. Over the following days, the community continued to work side-by-side using sustainable, earth-based techniques to sculpt a large, fluid eco-bench. A key architectural element was the inclusion of integrated planters built directly into the bench structure. Under professional artistic guidance, the colorful mandalas were embedded into the hand-sculpted form, and the project concluded with the community planting vibrant flora within the built-in planters.
Outcomes
The final outcome is a powerful testament to the healing power of public art and environmental design. By combining earthy, sustainable construction, living green plants, and the brightness of mosaic tiles, the project has transformed a calm corner of the city into a truly living landmark. The seating area with its blossoming built-in planters is designed specifically to invite life—a welcoming haven where children play, neighbors meet, and visitors pause to reflect. This unique sanctuary successfully turns a painful loss into a beautiful monument of hope, growth, and deep emotional resilience.
