Echoes of Village Life: Cultural Art Meets Community gardening
Community Garden, Pardes Hana, Israel
2022
Overview
Located within the green, sustainable ecosystem of the Pardes Hana Community Garden, this site-specific project celebrates cultural memory and global roots. Inside a traditionally constructed Ethiopian mud house, an intricate interior mural was hand-painted to showcase scenes of peaceful country and village life. Serving as a visual bridge across continents, the mural pays tribute to the deep heritage of the local Ethiopian-Israeli community while enriching the garden's cultural narrative.
Process
The creation of the mural was rooted in deep respect for oral histories, folk storytelling, and artistic collaboration. Rather than imposing an outside aesthetic, the composition is directly based on an authentic painting by a talented artist from the Ethiopian community. Adapting this fine art piece onto the raw, textured interior mud walls required delicate brushwork and close attention to the unique architecture of the structure. This artistic layer was designed to complement and complete an extensive outdoor eco-sculpture installation previously established throughout the public garden space
Outcomes
The final outcome is a hidden gem that transforms the traditional mud house into an educational, living museum space for garden volunteers, school groups, and visitors. By combining ecological community gardening with cultural preservation art, the installation highlights how public green spaces can become rich hubs for social inclusion, storytelling, and intergenerational pride.
